Why Is the Sierra Club Using a Xenophobe to Fight Natural Gas?

2013 February 1

** Unfortunately this post contains a video with language that is not suitable for all audiences.  Please use discretion in watching the video

nicole-portraitIf you thought the Sierra Club’s endorsement of anti natural gas activist, Vera Scroggins, in a recent letter, was bad because of an interaction displayed on her YouTube channel, just wait until you see what was left on the cutting room floor.

We came across yet another Vera Scroggins video this week that literally made my jaw hit my desk. I couldn’t understand in the original video, which can be viewed here, how anyone could be proud to have behaved in such a manner. Well, after watching this latest video I can say I still wouldn’t be proud of the behavior displayed in the original, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the appalling performance in the latest. Oh yeah, it’s that bad.

It appears we may have another SautnerGate scenario where Vera also published only a portion of a video only to have the whole thing surface later. Just to give a quick recap, the following video is of a confrontation between activist Vera Scroggins and Phelim McAleer, one of the producers of FrackNation. It took place while McAleer was attempting to ask questions of the celebrities who came to tour Susquehanna County, namely Susan Sarandon in this instance.

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 3.44.58 PM

Now before you watch, please make sure you are not in a public place, there are no young children in the room, and there is no one around you whom you wouldn’t want to hear F-bombs being blared from your computer or phone. The video definitely comes with a “WARNING EXPLICIT LANGUAGE,” caution, as Vera demonstrates “5 Rules of Engagement for the Desperate.”

This is one of the activists the Atlantic Chapter of the Sierra Club is touting as a savior to the people of Pennsylvania and New York? Let’s just say they may want to choose their icons more carefully in the future.  And Vera may want to start taking her own advice:

Vic, that’s the best you can do is call me names — that’s the final ploy of the desperate.
2013/01/20 at 7:23 PM

Is that the best you can say, Loren, is insult people who you don’t agree with; a rude, low-blow shot?
2012/12/30 at 8:47 AM

May we respect one another as much as possible as we pursue our particular beliefs and understanding?
2012/11/26 at 9:31 AM

We all have our particular viewpoints and beliefs; nothing can really change another’s view. We can listen respectively to one another and then follow our “Truth” and stand for what we believe. There’s always at least two sides to any issue. this is Life.

So, this still leaves us with a fundamental question; what was the Sierra Club thinking in relying upon this foul mouthed xenophobe to guide their entertainer supporters around Dimock?  If they and Yoko Ono have to resort to visiting junkyards and using people of this sort to make their case, things are looking pretty darned good for natural gas in New York.  No wonder the antis’ are starting to go berserk in a desperate attempt to keep it out.

Unfortunately in the field I have witnessed this behavior quite often from Vera and many others taken her side. not to mention the vandalism they or their kind have done to my property over the years. Some may ask how do I know it was anti gas activist that have visited me at night I can honestly say I don’t know for sure…BUT’ all the vandalism was done to my pro gas signs and structures holding them. This is very typical of Vera but I sure wish I had someone taping the conversation between Craig Stevens, (Bible in hand) and Craig Saunter at Binghamtons West Middle School two years ago. The language out of their mouths made Vera sound like the Pope on Christmas Eve. It was also one of the first times I had interactions with Julie, She stuck up for the two Craig’s saying to me that she knew both men very well and neither of them would ever swear.

PS: is she saying Ignorant or Imigrant?

To Mr Furmam, is it possible that your friends of natural gas signs could have been torn down by something else? Good grief the antis always get the blame! Have you checked for little tracks? Possibility with claw marks? By any chance did you check the alignment of that groundhog hole with the moon /sun? Well did ya? Just maybe you blocked the moon and or sun light from that little whitish haired freak and she couldn’t see her shadow? On the other hand we all Thank you for the proper placement of your signs! Apparently she couldn’t rip them down in time and alas could not see her shadow!! Thank God as we all know what this means (ITS GOING TO BE A EARLY FRACKING SPRING!)

How dare you to judge my character? I like to think my neighbors, cooleagues and customers respect me as aresult of the way I conduct myself. Google my name and I challenge to find any negative comments about me. And I am married Into a very Irish family and take offense to Vera’s prejudice. And yes , I have a money interest and I feel no reason to be ashamed of my investments. We are after all a capitalistic society and I am proud of that as well. I live the American dream and that’s no joke!

Mr. Beers comments toward Mr. Furman this is the typical argument you receive from the anti gas supporter.I experience the same types of things with debates in our local papers They can’t honestly debate they have to make rude remarks throw insults etc. And if the type of people you want supporting your side is people like Vera you then wonder why people won’t listen to your side and take into consideration what you are saying. If you want to be heard try debating your cause with true facts not insults.

We have experienced a lot of theft and vandalism to our signs and property. In South New Berlin a sign was painted with swasticas. We ordered 4000 friends of natural gas signs of which better than 50% have been Stolen. One old lady from Long Island was caught driving around picking them off peoples land(trespassing)Our larger billboard signs have been torn down.

The opposition have blocked roads. They have distributed misinformation to the elderly or spent a lot of money on newspapers, brochures and flyers, campaigns with misinformation.

We have not stolen personal property or miss led any one by way of propaganda.

We have spent most our time preparing leases or educating land owners and the general public, by way of coalition meetings. We have one goal in mind to inform with facts letting people then make their choice to lease their land or not.

As a friend of mine stated ” how about all those that truly believe in the evil of natural gas take an honorable stance and not use any product having any type of hydrocarbon from cradle to grave”.
That would at least give respect.
Now they plan on civil disobedience, bring it on ! It shows where the nuts are . Maybe this will be helpful for gun control. The identifying of unstable people.

Isn’t the broken mailbox a punishable act?. Cameras don’t cost much neither do wildlife cameras. You need to put them where they aren’t seen or certain people tamper with them. It’s about time these people get the punishments they deserve. It’s about time they are finally held accountable for their actions. They have gotten away with far to much for far to long. Someone should make examples out of them.

Someone should educate Vera. t’s a coil tubing job. Companies don’t frac at night unless they are operating a 24 hour/day operation. Thats a rare occasion. But coil tubing drillouts/cleanouts can operate during the night so the next zone will be ready to frac when crews arrive at daylight.

Tom I have lived here in NEPA since 1974.I raised my family here and did it without working for the gas industry .It was a good life peaceful and quiet .It is no longer either of these .I have payed taxes here for almost 40 yrs and have worked very hard to achieve what I have now ( again without money or help from the gas industry ) .Yes my children live outside this area and I live with that .Other can do the same .When I came here in 1974 I surely wasn’t seeking opportunity ,I was seeking peace ,quiet ,clean air ,and good down to earth country living .It has surely changed now and this is one reason I am against the drilling .It will change the area and for some it will be good ,and others that want that country simple life it will change too.I grew up in an industrial area and have great respect for this areas environment .I new pollution and industrialization very well .Many people I knew died from it .Maybe now you can see why I dislike this heavy industrial NG operation coming here .I’m over 40 years ahead of all you here that take it all for granted .Laugh if you want but we will lose an important asset as NG industrialization takes over here .

Well what about the other people of this area, the farmers that want their children to take over the property, or just everday folks who want their children to have opportunties close by?? Want to be a part of their grandchildrens lives and not from a far??? Why is it that only what you want counts….Many of us want these opportunities for our home, why dont we count?? Why does your sacrifices have to be ours, we want this industry and we live here too.

Bill, just trying to figure out why your so disgruntled? With all the wells drilled around you seems to drive you nuts! Why? I think there is more to this story of yours than your telling us. Could it be you purchased a little parcel of land sandwiched in between big farms, your paradise from the city? In turn its not working out the way you wished or are you ticked because all the land around you is leased? And your not because why? .Not enough land, not enough money,? Come on what’s the catch? I mean seems to me that you are a little tiny island in a big sea of farms that are leased and drilled and you are not hmmm? Have you also raised your clenched fist in the air and took the pledge? By the way its really creepy to lurk around in the middle of the night filming well sites, looking into the landowners house’s .Makes me wonder what else is being filmed!! Some one best tell the home owner to draw their shade’s ..

So Billy Boy…how many gas wells in Newark, Jersey City and Elizabeth..?? Don’t lecture me on the pastoral nature of Northeastern PA. I was born and raised here and I’ve been here a heckuva lot longer than you. This area is clean and beautiful because people like me and my ancestors before me live/lived here. Urban New Jersey and New York are sqaulid, disgusting, smelly petri dishes of filth and scum because people like Josh Fox, Vera Scroggins and you live or lived there.

As for urban energy production, Billy Boy, I direct you to Los Angeles County, CA, home of 3,071 active oil and gas wells; 842 of them offshore. Ever been to Beverly Hills, Brentwood, the Sunset Strip…..have you, Billy..??? Looks just like Elizabeth doesn’t it..??? Or Malibu…Lordy, Lordy…so much like Newark’s Broad Street Station neighborhood and lastly, the Sunset Strip reminds me sooooo much of that lovely area around the Jersey Gardens Mall. Oh sorry, I forgot, you’re a Joisey Boy…those directions would baffle you. I should have said Exit 13A off the Turnpike. 1000 pardons, Billy Boy.

First and foremost I do not condone the actions of Vera Scroggins,

But this article is nothing but hyperbole and Nicole Jacobs should be admonished for this distortion.

If one goes and actually looks at the alert the club sent out why did Nicole Jacobs cherry pick one person? The following names were mentioned in the original article.

Vera Scroggins, Craig Stevens, Rebecca Roter, Frank Finan, Ray Kemble and the Manning family. They welcomed us into their homes with complete hospitality, and Tammy Manning.

This is just sensationalism at its worst.
In addition the title of this article is even misleading “Why Is the Sierra Club Using a Xenophobe to Fight Natural Gas?” considering that the original article stated that they met the above listed people to hear their stories as the original article states ” meeting those whose health, homes and lives have been forever changed because of fracking:” again Nicole Jacobs distorts the information to look as if the club has sanctioned Vierra Scroggins actions, when the original article only mentions her as one of the people visited.

The whole article is one logical fallacy after another, from the ad-holmium attack against Vera Scroggins; Guilt by innuendo, by stating the Sierra Club is promoting Vera Scroggins, along with the Faulty generalization of the implications from the title. This is also stereotyping by showing the actions of Vera Scroggins the underling tone is that all people who do not agree are the same.

This article is a classic propaganda attack piece which Joseph Goebbels would be proud to have written.

But then again this is typical for EID article sand authors such as Nicole Jacobs as EID are not an ethical public relations operation. As they do not follow the public relations society of America code of ethics

FYI the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) is the world’s largest and foremost organization of public relations professionals. PRSA provides professional, sets standards of excellence and upholds principles of ethics for its members and, more broadly, the multi-billion dollar global public relations profession.
